Freeware information display systems

Hi

Does anyone know of some freeware to display a series of messages on a
screen for use around a school building abit like the airport screens. I
could use powerpoint but I was
hoping for something with more interesting effects. Maybe include a wider
choice of effects including
a (simulated) moving led display for example.
