Freeware for backup to tape drive

W

Wishmaster

Hello!

I am looking for a good freeware program to do backup of data to magnetic
tape (using tape drive).

I don't remember the model right now: it is at work, but I know that the
tape drive is SCSI (most tape drives are).

The OS on the machine is Windows NT 4.0 (it's a server).

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

windows NT ? i don't know this OS, but on windows ME
there is an "inbuilded" Backup program which saved to tape.

maybe you could use the cygwin's Tar program, it's is just
a suggestion. Or any free tar port for win 32, (which are not
running on ME.)

maybe Cobian backup, but it's not excatly free....

good luck,

It safeguards your data by copying it to a storage location.
Currently, it copies data to a local file system like a hard disk,
ZIP disk, or floppy disk; in the future, it will support others like
FTP sites or tape drives.

to say)

I prefer installing an FTP server on the PC (e.g. FileZilla server) and
then backup from the laptop through SyncBack.

would SyncBack copy/backup a running windows system ?

I just noticed that the imo amazing "HDcopy" program sees the
folders from over lan on the other PC ... nice indeed.

i wonder how such a program can access open files and copy them...

If you mean: Can it backup windows so that I can do a restore? No, it
cannot.

SyncBack can backup or synchronize directories/files. It can do so on
(shared) directories or FTP sites.

How to completely backup and restore your Windows configuration ,
without reinstalling anything (almost).

In an ongoing search for easy and free ways (well almost free) to
maintain a smoothly running
system, I'm presenting a procedure that I use a lot, and recommend to
anyone with enough
hardware and the guts to try it. It's a relatively painless, easy
method of completely backing
up your whole hard drive, thus making a system restore as painless as
possible, and without
reinstalling Windows!

Actually there are two different ways of doing this, and I'll present
them both. The first one
requires a second physical hard drive, and with the prices so low,
everyone should be able to
afford a smallish (1-3 gigabyte) drive for less than the cost of a
new floppy drive. The second
is for those who have a large hard drive, with multiple partitions.

BASK is a synchronization-based backup and restore utility. It allows
you to specify a source
and destination along with a mapping, a pattern to include, and a
pattern and folders to
exclude. You can determine file set differences through the date,
time, and size of the source
and destination files, or by checking the source file's archive
attributes. With BASK's 19 file
set operations, you can back up, restore, and delete files in a
number of useful ways.

BackupLatest
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bay/2965/backuplatest.html
BackupLatest backs up the most recently modified files. After the
initialization, it scans the
directories selected by the user and finds the files with the most
recent time stamp. It then
saves them on the drive mirroring the tree structure of the source
directories. The amount of
saved information can be set by the user, so one can for example save
the most recent 1.4Mb of
documents to the floppy disk.

can copy files to a network drive, second hard drive or another

No Hands Backup
http://hem.spray.se/anders.peterson/nhb.html
No Hands Backup is an easy to use backup application. After selecting
the source directories (the material you want to backup) NHB
recreates the original folder structure by copying new or changed
files to the backup, and by deleting files and folders from the
backup that have been deleted in the source directory. In that way,
an exact dublicate of your selected folders and files are created
somewhere else, i.e. the file system on the destination will be an
exact image of the original one. When run again, only changed files
are updated. Perfect to use with CeQuadrat PacketCD.

Handy Backup
http://backup.novosoft-us.com/index.html
Handy Backup 2.1 is an easy-to-use yet powerful backup program
designed for Windows 9x/NT/2000/Me/XP. It makes an automatic backup
of your critical data virtually to any type of storage media: floppy
disk, hard drive, network drive, or a remote FTP server. You only
need
to setup it once and it will monitor changes and execute scheduled
backups and synchronizations at the time you specify. Strong file
encryption, password protection and zip compression on the fly and
many other features will protect your valuable data. Detailed online
help is available. Best of all, Handy Backup is absolutely free up to
the end of 2001!

My Own Backup
http://www.woundedmoon.org/win32/mobv21.html
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7023,00.asp
Now you can avoid having to use multiple disks to make a typical data
backup. This free program
can make compressed backups of documents, graphics, system files, and
other files, and can
store them on media such as Zip and Jaz disks, CD-R and CD-RW discs,
a hard drive, or--if it's a really small backup--even a floppy disk.
The Windows Explorer-like interface allows you to
select files with ease, and a backup log helps you keep track of each
transaction. Backups are
done in "Sets": You can back up all of your data at one time, or
break it down into specific
categories. I liked this feature because I was able to keep huge
graphic files in one folder.
If you're working with really sensitive files, you can encrypt your
compressed backup, and
assign it a password. As with most programs, you can have this
utility back up at certain
intervals, or drag and drop files manually.

UPDATE2
http://www.profiles.com.lb
UPDATE2 is a maintenance tool, for the updating of files between
different computers, or on the same computer between different
folders and their subfolders.

UPDATE2 was designed with the developer and the site administrator in
mind.

Who needs UPDATE2:
UPDATE2 is typically used in situations such as the following:

· Your accounting data files are on your server, and you want to copy
them daily onto the local hard disk of your station, as an additional
backup.
Moreover, on Tuesdays, files get copied to your C:\BACKDATA\TUE\
folder, and so on.

· You want to keep a copy of all your Word documents, letters and
offers, on your removable drive (Zip, Jazz, Syquest, etc), which you
use to refresh your home copy of these documents. Symmetrically, any
document modified or created at home must be transferred the same way
back to
the office. You want this to be done without having to copy all your
files every time, but only those that have been changed.

http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/13/2/13-2-39.shtml
http://www.softpedia.com/public/scripts/downloadhero/13-2-39/
Unlike typical backup programs that copy files, DrvImagerXP makes
backups (image files) of NTFS
and FAT32 drive partitions (as well as floppy disks), for the
Windows2000/XP operating systems,
by copying, byte-for-byte, the drive partition sectors.
Unlike typical backup programs, the backup image file is an exact
reproduction of the entire
drive partition, including the boot sector, and every single
low-level byte written to that
partition by any program, including the operating system.
You'll never have install your operating system again! You can
install it, make all your option changes and get it just right, then
use DrvImagerXP to create a partition image that you could name
"Fresh Install". If you need to go back to a brand new fresh
installation of your
operating system, you can restore the partition using the "Fresh
Install" image in just a few
minutes.
You can make partition images of different operating systems and swap
them in and out at will!
Save floppy disk images for faster copying, or for archives.

Karen's Replicator
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp

Source and Destination folders can reside anywhere on your network.
Files larger than 2 GB are supported.

Options include repeated copies at intervals as short as a few
minutes, or as long as several months, copy only files that have
changed, and the replication of file deletions.

New features allow you to specify which files should not be copied,
and also which days a file should be skipped!

Having a lot of programs on your hard drive is a usual thing today,
but someday such users certainly will face such problem as moving
registered program from one place to another. It is a
problem, because almost every program stores some data into registry
(such as used file paths, for example), and you can't just move
program folder from where it is to another location,
because in 90% cases application will not run correctly anymore.
So was before. Today MoveIT! will help you to solve this problem.

Back it up
http://w1.321.telia.com/~u32102551/
A backup program. Backup creates ZIP files, mirror functions via copy
or FTP. Several backup sets can be configured. Folders and separate
files can be added to each backup set. For each backup set there's
the option to delete specified files depending on the extension you
enter. For each backup set extension for files that should not be
included in the backup can be specified. Back it up! takes command
line arguments so it can be executed from a batch files for example.
Or create special shortcuts(wizards built in for this).

NeoBack
http://stonefc.dreamhost.com/sfchome/Products/Software/software.html
Created out of a need I had to copy files to a backup server and not
finding what I needed online, NeoBack is a great backup solution if
you are needing to copy files to another drive, folder or networked
computer.

It supports manual mode, automatic mode and network UNC paths so you
can back to another computer using file and printer sharing.

I plan to add FTP support to future versions as well a few other
ideas to make the program more flexible.

Current issues. If a file is in use it may not copy. Make sure if
you copy through a network you are connect to the target computer
and logged in or backup will fail.

Be sure and read the README.TXT file for more information.

windows NT ? i don't know this OS, but on windows ME

There is one, IIRC (I don't have access to the server, right now, to check),
but it is too simple...
I want something more flexible.

I will try the Cygwin tools.
Looks like there is an 'mt' package (for magnetic tapes) that, if it is like
'mt' in Linux, with a simple shell script it will do! (I have done some
Linux/UNIX system administration in a past life)

Yeah and since you are on NT (at least on something else than
WinME) you may have luck. The problem is something
with the APIS, anyway the tape drive is not acessible in some OS,
and the Cygwin crews have not time (i guess) to achieve it .
