Freeware Tape Backup Software

Ok, I think this is a longshot (a very very long shot) but I'll try

I'm looking for a file back-up program that works with a tape unit.

But wit ther is more the software should:

- Run without making and maintaining tape libraries (just overwrite the tape
that is in the drive)
- Run scheduled (I can use AT commands)
- Run on a Windows XP PC
- Be able to generate, or better print a report of problems it encounters)
- Should be able to restore file without a catalogue, or rebuild a catalogue
from the tape it self

What I realy don't need:
- fancy report techniques (an onscreen message or a printer message is
enough)
- Tape library (I realy don't need that stuf for a 5 tape schedule. It only
prevents the back-up from working when the wrong tape is in - and that
happens a lot.
- Software that builds a catalogue, but cannot restore if the catalogue is
messed up (Yosimite)

Well I hope someone can help me.

Thanks In Advance,

MK

What's wrong with the backup that comes with XP?

I must admit I haven't used it, but I assume that in XP Pro it is the
same as that on NT/2K/2K03.

Er..... XP home (no Back Up app, at least, I never found it). yeah, strange
kind of 'server' it is. an XP home with a HP Dat tape. The computer works as
a kind of file server for autocad Drawings. And tey refuse to spend extra
money for Arcserver or something.

Furthermore, afaik, the back-up version of XP professional or the server
editons need a tape library to be scheduled. And that is something I realy
don't want (at least once every 10 days they will put in a wrong tape, and
blame me because the app will not back up).

Basicly it comes down to:
I'm and external system administrator for this company
They dont'want to spend any more money on real back-up software
They will have problems using a tape/media library
Windows Back-up.exe and Yosimite tapeware will need tape/media libraries.

In my mind, the only real solution is to find some software that is
straigforward:
a "Put any tape in the drive, and I will back-up after I earase the tape"
back-up software.

[SNIP the woes of foolishly cheap customers (and have we not all had
them at one time or another)]

There may be a backup program hidden on the XP install disk, have a
dekko around that.

HP used to have various tape drive progs on their web site (well, back
when they bought COlorado they did), have you had any luck there?

You'll need the DAT model number, and a while to brose the various options.

That's a grat Idea I'm gonna check HP site.

Concerning the XP CD: it is (of course a preinstalled windows XP version,
with a minimal hidden partition for restore purposes. (Got to love it :-s)
