Fraud on ebay?

I bought a 9700 Pro some time ago from a web retailer. The card arrived and had a 9700 Pro sticker on the back. I'm not real up on
video cards so I didn't think it was anything else. Well it did not benchmark quite what I thought it should. I thought this was
due to it being an OEM "Built For". I talked the wife into letting me buy a 9800 Pro "Built By".

I then sold it to a very nice guy (Brent, I'm still real sorry!) that I met through this group. He is a few levels above me, and
knew right away that it was NOT a 9700 Pro, it was a 9500 Pro. He pointed me to photos of the two cards. That convinced me! I
sent him his money back, & I got the card back. I did reimbursed for the card, and they gave some flimsy excuse. But, I got my
money (less shipping to & from times 2) back, Brent got his money back, and they got their 9700 Pro, I mean 9500 Pro back.

This whole nightmare lasted about 3 months! But, I certainly learned in the process. I really wished I had checked into it BEFORE
I sold the thing.

Good luck in your "journey".

Steve

Hi Steve,

Yeah... I think that these guys were thinking I wasn't goint to check.
A modded card show in your XP as the one modded to, so people not
caring about clock speeds and stuff wont notice (your case).

In any case I'm going to order a brand new one as soon as I get the
confirmation from my CC that the money has been reimbursed.

A separate post is coming looking for advice.

Some news here...
I'm going to wait for the refund and when I see it appearing on my
on-line balance I will ship it back. No need to use my insurance
policy.

If I was the seller, I would wait until I received the goods back
before giving you a refund. That is fairly standard...

Enjoy,

Agreed, that is standard for practically any retailer online or not.

eBay is not really a place to find good deals on new hardware. It is
the best place to get ripped off on new hardware, as JL was. The best
prices on eBay aren't good enough compared to buying the same item
through a legitimate vendor. Buying "new" graphics cards and CPUs on
eBay is asking for trouble.

Just my opinion....

The good news is that they understand and they are willing to refund
me as long as I ship it back.

They probably won't refund you until they get the card back.

Not with my card (National City Visa) I bought a P4 3.06GHz on eBay and the
seller never shipped the goods. I called the CC company and they removed
the charge immediately, no questions asked. That seller had done the same
thing quite a few other buyers of the same CPU (it was a Dutch auction).
PayPal threatened to cut me off, though, since I used them to pay the seller
using my CC.

Hmm, good for you. In my case I had pre ordered the Voodoo5 and the
seller went bankrupt and never shipped me anything. It took me about
two months to get the CC charge taken off my card and I still had to
pay the CC bill until it was sorted.

make sure you send it back insured and with a tracking #, notify your CC
company and paypal that the transaction is in dispute, but it seems the
seller is being reasonable, you'll never know till you actually get your
credit card charges reversed.

You got screwed..

1 - download AIDA32 from www.aida32.hu - it may help figure out what
the true card is.

2 - take a picture of the product.... put it on a site we can access
OR (no problem in my book, but some people go nuts) up load the pic
here... I have no problems (It is within TOPIC).

3 - Keep the product on ebay handy... does it show a PIC of the
product.

4 - Paid too much... ATI 9800s are $200.

5 - Sorry

Hi again,

Happy ending here. Finally the seller refunded me all the money +
shipping costs. They were really nice as it wasn't even necessary to
dispute the charge or wait.

They claimed they didn't know as they just resell refurbished stuff
and sometimes they can overlook some items.

I have my trust in ebay back again although as people pointed out I
wont buy HW there anymore.

Thanks everybody that helped me out. It was a really sad situation.

Really? Where.. I found a saphire at $224 at newegg. That's cheapest.

BTW is the saphire a good card?

ATI brand 9800PRO/128 - Frys, new unopeaned boxes - $249 at the
register.

Amazing price for a not online retailer. Funny how prices have gone
down in just two weeks. I'm happy I didn't get that 9700Pro after
all..
