FP 2002. Can't change publish to different URL

Hi all

I've searched the newsgroup archives on Google and there is lots of
talk about this but I still haven't seen a solution.

I have a Windows / FrontPage hosting reseller account. A friend is
moving his sites to my host. He hasn't moved the dns for his domains
yet so I've setup subdomains of my domain as temporary aliases.

To publish to his current host he publishes to something like:
www.HisDomain.com

To publish to the new account on my server he needs to publish to
something like:

HisName.MyDomain.com

He says FrontPage 2002 does not give him the opportunity to change. He
is selecting Publish from the File menu, not the Publish button. I
haven't seen this myself since I'm on the other side of the world.
We're setting up remote access so I can have a look at it. I think he
is telling me that the URL pops up but it is grayed out so he can't
change it. The only time it lets him edit this is when he publishes a
new web for the first time.

I only have FP 2000. That pops up a dialog box with a URL that I can
always accept as is or edit.

Has anyone else seen this or know what the problem is?

FP will not recognize publishing to subdomains.

He must have a subweb on the host server, such as www.mydomain.com/hisname

Then, you must set up dns records on the dns server to point to
hisname.mydomain.com

He need to use File Menu | Publish Web and enter the URL. However the subdomain, need to be a FP
subweb/subsite under your domain, which is then pointed to as a subdomain.

So he would publish to http://www.yourdomain.com/hissubweb and you would then point subdomain to
hissubweb.

Thanks Tom but I'm not convinced about the blanket comment about
subdomains.

Let's say a big multinational company had the domain bigcompany.com.

The US division has their site at http://usa.bigcompany.com
The UK division has their site at http://uk.bigcompany.com

They have DNS 'A' records pointing to totally different servers in
different countries. There may not even be a web server at
http://bigcompany.com or http://www.bigcompany.com

Are you saying that the US or UK divisions could not use FrontPage?

Another (true) example: There is a company that owns the domain
au.com. They sell subdomains like mydomain.au.com as an alternative to
the official Australian domains which are .com.au although people
don't really think of them as subdomains. Technically, mydomain.au.com
is the same as mydomain.au.com. Are you saying that it won't work if
someone registers mydomain.au.com and points the 'A' record to a
FrontPage hosting account?

Isn't mydomain.co.uk just a 'subdomain' of co.uk?

He says that when he does that, a box pops up with the URL previously
used but it does not give him the opportunity to change it.

You are going to have to have control over a dns server in order to
accomplish the task, and create dns entries with IP addresses that you
control. Until his move to another host resolves through internic.

US or UK divisions or anyone else can use FrontPage.

It's all about DNS records and name servers.

Thanks again. I'm pleased we cleared that up. I have control of the
dns and I know what I'm doing there. That's all quite unrelated to my
FrontPage problem.

I should have simply said that my friend is trying to publish his
existing FP 2002 site to a different host with a different URL. The
fact that its a dot com with three dots and therefore a 'sub domain'
is irrelevent.

He is using 'Publish' from the File menu but he says it won't let him
change the publishing URL.

Any ideas anyone?

It is not irrelevant, if the FP extensions are involved.

must be the root web on the (virtual) server, or FP will error that
the extensions are not installed.

As for being unable to change the URL using File->Publish Web, I have
never seen this problem in any version of FP.
Try cleaning the FrontPage installation by deleting temp files and web
cache files.
There is a tool for this at
