footnote misnumbering

Word 2007: I have a long document in which I have inserted over 100
footnotes. Suddenly today, when i treid to insert a footnote half way through
teh document, instead of it numbering 55 since it was after footnote number
54, it went back to number 1. I found one suggestion which was to delete the
normal.dotm file but that does not work.
Other information - other documents seem to be behaving normally.
I saved the whole file as an rtf document but the problem persisted
I tried saving the document into a blank document - no use.
If I cut and paste 2-3 paragraph from the middle of the document into a
blank page, the footnotes do not renumber to start at 1 but keep the numbers
in the original document

Is there more than one Section in your document?

What procedure do you use for inserting a footnote?

That the cut-out section doesn't revert to 1 suggests that at some
point the dynamic footnote numbers were converted to plain text.
