footnote misnumbering

I have started a document and used my first footnote. There is a number "1"
on the main document, but a number "3" in the footnote section. How can I
get them synched.

Exit Word. Rename the Normal template (called normal.dot if you are using
Word 97-2003 or normal.dotm if you are using Word 2007). Restart Word. Now,
can you insert a footnote without seeing any peculiarities with the numbering?

I do not know how to find normal.dot. Once I find it, do I rename it?
Please give me specific instructions.

Exit Word (and Outlook if it is running). Use the Search feature in Windows
(Windows key + F) to locate normal.dot. Be sure to search hidden files and
folders. Rename the file when you find it.

However, renaming normal.dot doesn't fix issues with existing documents;
these must be taken care of separately. For example, assuming that you
created the footnote properly, copying document contents, except for the
final paragraph mark (¶), into a new blank document might fix the issue.

Note that you can show/hide paragraph marks as well as other nonprinting
marks by pressing Ctrl+Shift+8.
