Fonts awry

An "incident" of unknown origin happened this afternoon and after I rebooted
some fonts are replaced by the font that provides the little boxes and - x
symbols. I wonder whether that could be the font cache. Or something grimmer.
So, first, where is the font cache and second -- before I repair install the
OS -- what other steps can I take? (I already restored the system to last week;
no help.)
