font will not change back it just becomes a row of little squares

in a sentence with more than one font I highlighted several words (some in
one font, some in another) and changed them all to yet a third font. Now no
matter which font I select the letters all appear as little squares.
What can I do? NOTE: the fonts I used are symbolic and therefore illegible.
I need to be able to read what those words once meant.
