Folders in "Content.IE5" folder

What are those cryptically named folders which are to be found in:

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5

They look like inidvidual profiles of some sort.

I sign on as a user with admin rights and have got 5 folders inside
'Content.IE5'. Why would I have so many entries there?

Because IE caches content to disk, it has to do with folder/file
structure limitations. Just a few hours on the web, can leave
thousands of files in the cache. Windows has physical limits on
the number of files within a folder. I believe it's done to avoid
performance issues with excessively large folders.

Oh my, this is such an old topic that has been discussed practically to
tears. Not to be short with you, but there is abundant explanation on the
internet of how Content.IE5 works and I suggest you check it out. You can
read about it in as much depth as you enjoy.

What you are seeing is the "cache" for IE. It's where IE stores all of the
web pages you have visited in their separate components. The TIF is divided
into separate folders for faster access, and as they reach a certain size,
more individual folders are created. They have cryptic names for security
reasons. Viewing them in Windows Explorer will make it look like each
folder has the same contents, but it is not so, due to the way Windows
Explorer presents those files to you. Yes, you can delete those files. The
easiest way to do that is to go to IE and Tools...Internet Options...General
tab...Delete Files. With many folders, this may take awhile, so go get a
cup of tea or a beer.

More info here: http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/answers3.htm#Cache

More info on how to clear the TIF completely, including the hidden index.dat
file in the History and TIF folders that can get left behind when you empty
the TIF via IE's interface:

I tried to find some decent info on this topic but couldn't.

What search words do I need to use in Google?

Go to this group in your web browser at Google:

in the search box for THIS GROUP (not the top search box) WITH THE QUOTATION MARKS making
it a KEY PHRASE type:

Then click the: Search This Group Button
