Folder view with two panes

Some of my desktop folders, which showed a single pane with the folder
items in it now show two panes. The right pane has the folder items in
it while the left pane shows 'File and Folder Tasks', 'Other Places',
and 'Details'. How do I switch such a folder back to the previous view
which only showed the single pane with with the folder items ?

Tools --> Folder Options --> General tab --> Use Windows Classic Folders -->
Apply --> OK.

That corrected it. Strangely most of my folders were using Windows
Classic Folders but somehow one or two were not, although I thought the
option above should apply to all folders. Anyway all is well now.

Only if you make it "Apply to all folders" and you do not set "Remember Each
Folder's View Settings" (both under the "View" tab instead fot he "General"
tab from the above instructions.
