Folder redirect not working for some users

I've come accross an unusual problem with folder redirect and I wonder if
anyone has any idea what's causing it.

I'm redirecting My Documents from my XP Xlients to a Windows 2000 Server.
This is working fine for most users but for a few the folder redirect is not
happening.

Whenever an effected user logs on they get a Folder Redirection error 112:
This security ID may not be assigned as the owner of this object. I also get
a Userenv error 1085: The Group Policy client-side extension Folder
Redirection failed to execute. A My Documents folder is created on the data
server but only has a (hidden) frd*.tmp in it. Every time the user logs on
one of these is created.

I am redirecting to \\server\%username%\My Documents

I've had a look on technet
(http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/en-us/management/manage_faq.mspx)
and the problem seems to be if the user folder was precreated and the "Grant
the user exclusive rights to my documents" option is selected. The article
suggests deselecting deselecting "Grant the user exclusive rights to my
documents". However in my case the "Grant the user exclusive rights to my
documents" was not selected on the folder redirection policy in the first
place (although the \\server\username folder was precreated).

Trashing the local user profile seems to fix this error but I don't really
want to resort to that. I have tried clearing the offline folders cache on an
affected users machine but that hasn't made a difference.

Has anyone else come accorss this error?

What was the original state of the folder structure? Did you create
those user folders by hand or did you use Group Policy to do that?

Since you did not tick the "Grant the user exclusive rights to my
documents" option, what permissions do users have to access their
folders? Remember: they need Full Control. Trashing the user and
recreating the folders seems to strengthen the theory of "broken"
permissions.

cheers,

Florian

I created the user folders by hand and granted the users full control
permission.

When I delete the users profile on the client PC (but do nothing to the
structure on the data sever) My Documents redirects fine. Because of this I
believe it must be something on the client PC, hence why I tried deleting the
offline files cache.
