Folder option\files types

Hello
I run a windowXPPRO and I can't make any changes in the registered files.

If I go: Folder options\files types,
all four buttons that makes it possible to do changes such as: New, Delete,
Change, Advanced, are all grayed out.

How can I fix those grayed buttons that prevent me from working on my files?

Thanks

Hi janet,

You must be logged on as local administrator. Check the value of
'NoFileAssociate' under registry key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
if it exist, please delete it and then reboot.

Regards.

Here's the same thing in a .reg file, in case you prefer not to edit the
registry yourself:

314. File Associations are Greyed Out

Dear Elmo

I love you.
You did what no MVP was able to do for months.
Because my notice has been sitting there in another MS site, all MVP surely
saw it there, but no one knew what to do!

Moreover:

I myself have this "Kelly 400 tweaks" sitting on my screen. I used
successfully it in the past for other matters, I have read it again and
again but I was blinded to it and didn't find it.

Now one click on # 314 fixed it and it works.

Many thanks
Janet

That's great news! Kelly's site is one of the best!

Hello, I hope my note finds everyone doing well. I recently encountered
the same problem when I attempted to edit the Folder Options/File Types.
The odd thing is that this only occurs for some of the File Types. For
instance, for Internet Shortcut and URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol the
Delete, Change and Apply buttons are all greyed out.

I am trying to enable these buttons on my home machine, which runs on
Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, SP3. I am the only one who uses
it, so I always assumed I had Administrator rights. I double checked by
going into Control Panel - User Accounts and I am the only one.

I followed the advice here and used the link from "Kelly 400 tweaks" to
add "NoFileAssociate (Value 0)" to the registry. I rebooted and checked
the registry (I did a find for NoFileAssociate and it had been added),
but alas there was no change. The buttons are still greyed out.

I am not sure what I could be doing wrong. I do not log into my
computer with a password; I just get a welcome screen and it proceeds to
my desktop. The only time I am presented with a login screen is if I
boot into Safe Mode, and even then the password is blank (I just hit
enter). I tried logging into Safe Mode to see if that made a difference,
but there is no change to the Folder Options/File Types.

I look forward to your suggestions!

That's correct for "URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol" except that there
is no Apply button. The Advanced button should be available for that
file type. If you're having trouble associating http with a browser,
try one of the following:

- Fix File Associations.
http://dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

- Get hyperlinks in OE to open IE:

hth,
