"Folder List"

When using Windows Mail, I have a series of folders and sub-folders on the
left side. It used to be that the sub-folders were always closed. Now, for
some reason, the sub-folders are always open when I open up Windows Mail.
This is regardless of how I exit Windows Mail. In other words, when I'm all
done with Windows Mail, I leave it with all sub-folders closed, but the next
time when I open and use it again, I find that all the sub-folders are open
again.

Can anyone help me figure out how to stop the gremlins from doing these bad,
bad things? (Please copy me @ (e-mail address removed))

under general tab of Options uncheck the box for
display folders with unread messages.

I have the same problem with the folder list as the first post, so I tried
your solution to the problem. It failed... Had no effect what so ever even
after shutting Windows Mail down and re-opening it.
Anyway, I need the "Display folders with unread messages" box to remain
checked to show me where all my mail has arrived in there respective folders.
I have filters set up to automatically sort my mail into my folders and
subfolders as it is downloaded off the server. I want folders to open that
contain unread messages, but not all 330+ folders and sub-folders. The way
it is now with everything opening up all the time, it defeats the whole
purpose of creating a menu... and makes it almost impossible to find
anything.!!!
PLEASE... SOMEONE... ANYONE... IS THERE A CURE FOR THIS OUT THERE ???

my solution to that frustrating problem was to mark all the messages in folders I do not want to see as READ.
that way the option works.

if there are unread messages it displays the folders. PERIOD.

That is no solution at all, let alone a cure for the problem. It should work
the same way as it always has in XP's Outlook and Outlook Express. When the
option “display folders with unread messages†is checked, the ONLY folders
that should open are ones that actually have UNREAD messages in them, not
folders with no unread messages. The way it is right now, ALL folders open
up all the time whether they have UNREAD messages in them or not and whether
that option is checked or not. It almost acts as though the option of
“display folders with unread messages†is just totally disconnected, because
absolutely nothing changes when unchecked vs checked.

What folder list problem? Many of us Windows Mail users don't
have a good to go back to previous messages in this thread unless
you quote them.

To fix some folder list problems, click on View, then Layout. If
there is no check mark in the box before Folder List, click on
this box, then Apply. Click on OK.

You can also hover your cursor over the symbols to the right of
Send/Receive on the blue bar near the top of the screen until
their labels appear. Find the one labelled Folder List and click it.

I'm not quite sure how or where to fix it yet, but the problem seems to be
that the default setting for the "Local Folders" list is set on "EXPANDED"
instead of "COLLAPSED" view.

Your Solution:
You can see and read all of the posts on any thread if you double-click the
bold "Thread Subject". . . . . . . or, click on the + sign and click on any
post under that thread subject.

I assume you are talking about the web interface to Microsoft Communities.
Most of us responders here use a more professional tool called a news reader.
Windows Mail is a pretty decent news reader. Try it by clicking on this link:

When I click on the bold thread subject, I see only the messages I
haven't read yet. I don't see a + sign to click on. Are you sure
you're reaching the newsgroup through the newsreader function
of Windows Mail?
