Could be an indication of a bad disk. You weren't trying to save/open
something on the disk using a program like Word or Excel were you?

Well forget the floppies. They were never intended for permanent storage,
even when the technology was new many decades ago.

Last weekend I finally got around to moving my remaining files that had been
saved on 3.5" floppies (backups of backups that were many years old). Some
of those disks hadn't been touched in at least five years and, guess what,
eight of about three dozen disks were unreadable.
