Firewall <> local network

I networked a portable with WinXP pro to a PC with WinXP home with a
crossover ethernet cable. I can get both filesharing and internetsharing to
work, but after a while (1hr or so) the filesharing stops working. If I turn
my Norton Firewall (IS) off and on right after, it works again for a while.
The firewall is set to accept communication from 168.192.0.x
Does anyone have a clue how I can het the local network filesharing to work
without having to use this trick all the time? What causes it?

I assume that you are not trying to access the Internet this way, only
do file and printer sharing. If you wanted to access the Internet, you
would need to set up Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Look in the
NIC's Properties from Device Manager and disable power management. See
if that helps.

If you *do* want to set up ICS, here are links to help:

Yes I do! And yes I use ICS for it (and I have never had a printer).
The internetsharing part works fine. What does not work fine I described
above.

ICS requires that you use set IP addresses on both the host and client
computers. I believe they are 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.xx (your choice
for the client). You can only use ICS with those addresses, so that
could be why you are having problems. Here are the links to help with
ICS once again for your convenience:

Been there, done that, that was not my question at all.
(I switched 192 and 168 in my post)
It had to do with the firewall and filesharing remember? not with ICS.

2 things:

1) If you didn't do a typo in that IP number, you may want to check that
out.

2) If your Nortons firewall isn't set to automatically stop things working
on the network after a prescribed period, then check that the system isn't
allowed to power down the NICs after a certain period.

I use ICS with 192.168.0.x numbers and also with 169.254.140.x numbers.

ICS automatically assigns 192.168.0.1 to the host computer and
192.168.0.2-192.168.0.254 to the client computers. Microsoft doesn't
support using any other addresses. If you do, there's no guarantee
that ICS will work.

In particular, changing the host's address disables the host's DHCP
server, requiring you to manually assign TCP/IP properties on the
client computers.

Does your setup work OK with 169.254.140.x numbers? That range is
technically reserved for automatic assignment on networks without DHCP
servers and shouldn't be assigned manually. There ranges that are
reserved for private networks that are OK to assign manually are:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

Please... *I have no problem with ICS* , it works just fine.
It's the FILESHARING that doesn't seem to cooperate with my firewall for long.
The problem is only temporarily solved by turning the firewall off,
accessing the shared folder on the other PC, and turning the firewall back on.

Then my ICS wouldn't be working so well...

Well, as I said, I use those number ranges. One network is wired and the
other is wireless and both go through this machine I am typing from and I
dont bridge.
In particular, changing the host's address disables the host's DHCP
server, requiring you to manually assign TCP/IP properties on the

.....which is what I do anyway. I got rather sick and tired of waiting so
long for XP to get itself seated before networking! Besides, I use PC
Anywhere on 2 machines and that means manual IP assign. Guess I should go to
VNC one day.

Didn't you mention the firewall was Nortons? If not, which one are you
using?

I posted because of the *filesharing* problems... which I described over and
over again in this thread. Please read above.
The Norton firewall is interfering, eventhough I configured it for the
standard range.

I would prefer that too; the wizards (the name implies the presence of magic
and the absence of logic) were driving me nuts for a while.
Could you tell me how exactly you get to those settings in XP home and XP pro?
I might be able to find out then why my Norton firewall still doesn't seem
to be configured right. Filesharing only works when I switch off the
firewall, connect, and switch in on again (it works only for a while).
Internet sharing works all the time.

I just assigned them manually. I assume you know how to do that, yes?

You may have the security level set too high for the home network side.

It's official: I give up on filesharing over my local network (i.e. one cable).
Nobody here knows or is able to explain. Microsoft networking sucks, and for
Norton firewall questions I'll go somewhere else. Thanks for those that tried!
