Firewall gets turned off in XP, how to make it stay on??

Hi all

Running newer XP, have automatic updates on, also running Norton Internet
security.

have had several problems with the Nortons, it will sometimes stop all email
from being sent, turning off scanning? it will scan anyway. sending a
bitmap file thats 2M will take 20 minutes for it to scan?

Anyway, I noticed one day that on Network settings, it only said connected,
not "firewalled". I set the firewall = ON. next day? its off. so for
months now its been a battle, start the computer, go to network settings and
usually its off, have to turn firewall ON again.

its most likely the Nortons product, but there is no warning or notice it
will change the firewall. Sometimes for no reason, a small popup just above
the clock in the lower right corner will say "rules automatically" and
thats it. Sentence fragment. has norton colors.

Other times a popup will take focus and put the mouse in the upper left
corner. Im typing at 80wpm and suddenly nothing is on the screen being
added, and I hit some key that tells the stupid popup yes, do this whatever
thing I have no clue about.

I want to get a 7/16" bolt and lockwasher, drill a hole and force the
firewall to stay ON, tighten it down, then tack it with the welder so there
aint no way anything can turn the firewall OFF unless I say so. but I dont
know how. any ideas are appreciated

Hi Brad,
It is normal for AV like Norton and others to Disable Windows Firewall.
Because they have a more Secure Firewall and to avoid confusion with two
Firewall, one POP up and say this should not have access and the other say
that Okay!.
So in this case it is Norton which Disable your Firewall, simply you may
grant a Port or Application full access in Windows Firewall, for that reason
Norton would like to look after this option and be sure that this
Port/Application not abusing your OS.
If you have Problem with Norton being Bossy! try to read the setting manual
and set it to give you more Freedom, but be sure to be safe than open to
attakers and Hackers.
Hope this helps

Hi Nass

Thank you for that info. so the Nortons probably IS taking over the
firewall.

I dont know which firewall is better, if Microsoft would have the best by
far or Nortons does, or they are the same. It bothers me that Nortons does
not run smoothly so I dont trust it with the firewall. XP seems to run
flawlessly, the only glitches Ive seen come from, Im guessing, drivers from
various devices that I overload.

So then you would say that when the XP firewall is turned OFF that its
Nortons turning its one ON?

Im worried that Nortons turns XP firewall OFF then forgets to do anything
and the system is exposed. I would like some message from XP when the
firewall is turned OFF.

Or maybe I should take an old computer, put 2 network cards in and load it
with some BSD/unix firewall app? Ive wanted to try this but dont know where
to start, making a firewall from an old pc to use on the newer pc?

ok thanks again

Hi Brad,
You should leave Norton deal with it, Norton Firewall better than Windows,
because it is automatically make decisions and block any attack or Virus, but
Windows it will wait for your Order= Settings (i.e allow port, applications
etc..).
To make a Hardware Firewall it is Bretty Expensive than buying a Router
with Firewall on it, but if you would like to be the Boss, Hardware Firewall
is your choice, again when you know how to configure it and avoid the catch
which Hacker and Dropers Do?.
Try A monthly Magazine like PC magz or google for it to know much about.
Hope this helps
