Firebird now Firefox 8

Another difference is that Firefox 0.8 is apparently available only
with the installer, while you can still get Mozilla 1.6 in a zipfile.
Possibly important to those (like me,) who have heard about the
installer bug which, in rare cases, deletes the entire contents of
C:\Program Files.

Can you _imagine_ the uproar if M$ released a program that could do this?

Well, you can bet the responses wouldn't be as good-natured. :)

When MS releases XP SP-2 with its new browser security and functionality I
bet it won't be welcomed nearly as much.

But /potentially/ much more destructive in its effects, if the installation
goes wrong for some reason, than anything produced by some people with
earlier versions of the Firefox installer, regardless of whether or not the
user slipped up with the procedure.

Surely the installation of any service pack has the potentiality of
wrecking the OS?

Cheers,

More destructive than deleting c:\program files?

Installing to a custom folder is hardly a slip-up.

I had no problems either.

To my disgust,
everything (including the just downloaded Firefox installer, which is in a
different folder) was wiped clean.

Well, another good reason to pass this time. I guess Opera stays my
preferred browser for a while longer.

This is pathetic. An installer/uninstaller that wipes folders it's
not supposed to touch.

Does ANYBODY test software any more?

The ZIP version is already available. As was previously noted, why is an
installer even needed for Firebird/Firefox?

Opera your preferred browser? I pity you.

To appeal to the masses--including the those incapable of comprehending
adding a program without an installer. Success requires catering to the
lowest common denominator.

Hi All

Downloaded and installed Firefox0.8

I observed NO problems..

This browser works fine..

I have to get used to the "tabs" and new windows features, but I can say, on
a 56K and crappy modem, this browser Firefix is about 70 to 80 % faster, in
loading pages, than IE 6.

Good Luck to all..

I've installed it on Win98SE and a couple of WinME systems, and have
run into two problems. It stole several image file associations from
ACDSee and won't give them back. Then on my wife's WinME, she was no
longer able to print to her local HP 690C from ACDSee 2.41 after
Firefox was insalled. She gets a GPF in COMDLG32.DLL.

Has anybody had any trouble with Firefox being a resource hog? I finally
got it working today (TBE problem) and today was the first time in yonks I
got a 'resources low' error.

Chakolate, hoping it's a coincidence

No trouble here (WinXP Home).
I see it takes about 11 MB of memory while is working, and only 1.5 MB when
minimized.

You won't have low resource problems in WinXP, but in Win9x the number of
available resource handles is very limited. Microsoft could fix this, if
they wanted, but they never will (Win9x being end-of-life).

Okay, I notice today I've had no resources error, so it was probably just a
fluke.
