Firebird now Firefox 8

Steve

There certainly are a lot of early birds trying to get this worm this
morning! It is just as well - if the bug which causing the installer
to delete C:\Program Files has not been fixed, they can tell us about
it.
This little bird has duly eaten the worm with no after-effects! ;-)

Greetings Steve.

Hope you can give us your personal views on firefox, after a few days
or a week.

I'm going to stay with Firebird 0.7 for about a month or so.

The server seems to be busy. Are there any mirrors avalable other than
ftp.mozilla.org?

I have been using the 0.8 nightly builds -- 0.8 is superior to 0.7, I'll
give you that. I have yet to use Firefox; having a hell of a time getting
a hold on a download.

Please post a link that documents this issue.

I've been able to download both FireFox and TB 0.5, but it took quite
some time before the server responded. Quick downloads once it did,
however. Dunno about alternate links.

Same story, here -- just keep trying, you'll get through. Not aware of any
alternative links, though http://www.mozillazine.org may have a link to
something or other.

What an extremely, /extremely/ stupid name. I get all kinds of
connotations when I hear that name. "Powerful browser" is not one
of them.

How are we going to sell people on something called 'Firefox'? :(
We'll all be able to say "Firefox Down" and Clint Eastwood will come
round to fix it )

I originally read about this bug on forums.mozilla.org, but their
server is down right now, so here's an alternative discussion of the
issue.

Thanks.

The chances of deleting c:\program files are slim but the possibility
remains. You must install Firebird into an empty directory or ZAP - all ! So
please don't choose to install it into c:\program files or any folder that
already has data in it. I see this bug has been around for a long time but
I'm surprised the install routine hasn't been rewritten to *eliminate* any
possibility of this ever happening (again).

A lot of apps have strange names ("TMPGEnc", anyone?) yet are instantly
recognisable and accepted by those using them. Mention TMPGEnc to those
in the video encoding game and it's "Cool app!". Same will happen with
Firefox, in due time.

I think the bug is still there. A few hours ago I installed Firefox on my G
partition where I also put my downloaded files and other less important
ones. After a few test runs, Firefox was uninstalled. To my disgust,
everything (including the just downloaded Firefox installer, which is in a
different folder) was wiped clean. But well, I managed to
redownload/reinstalled Firefox in a newly clean folder. I will give it a few
more test runs (install/uninstall/reinstall) to see what happen.

The trademark probably means that this is permanent. Even after
Seamonkey has been cancelled.
