finally removed adware.gator

i'm no professional and not recommending for anyone to do
this i just want to let people know what happened to me
and how we finally fixed it. we had problems and we fixed
all but one with help from other sites and programs, but
we were not able to fix this problem.
i have nortons and when it would run a scan it would read

"C:\WINDOWS\downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1
\HDPlugin1101.dll is infected with Adware.Gator"
nortons was the only one that found this problem it did
not show on hjt log, ad-aware se, msas beta 1, spybot,
spywareguard, and sbc. we used the adware.gator removal
tool and it said it could not find adware.gator. we tried
to use the manual removal instuctions and we could not
find anything it said we should find.
finally after a lot of trouble someone told us to go to
C:\WINDOWS\ browse > all files and scan each file with
nortons. when nortons scanned the E folder(downloaded
program files) it said it was infected. we opened the
folder and everything in there was fine, but the scan
said it was in there. (I'M NOT RECOMMENDING ANY ONE TO DO
THIS) one by one we deleted the items in the folder, re-
started and re-scanned. finally we deleted all items in
folder and scan still said it was in there.
(AGAIN NOT TELLING ANYONE ELSE TO DO SO)
we deleted the E folder and did a full system scan
and found no infections. we have a new E folder with new
downloads and scans A-okay.
i hope this helps others
and again these are not instrucions for anyone to try and
i'm not recommending anyone to do this

that is interesting.. maybe norton is the best at
fighting spyware.. :) apparently, it was a nasty that
uses a hidden file, and it probably would have been a
task to remove it.. too bad that you could not submit the
file to other antispyware vendors..

Spyware by itself can be fairly simple to remove, BUT, these new versions
with the rootkits, trojans, and other protective apps keeping it installed
are making it a process that requires antispy and antivirus working together
to get the job done as well as brute force manual labor.
