Filesharing Problem - Connect password.

Guest

I'm running a small network at home and another one at the office. In both
places I use TrueCrypt to encrypt information. That utility mounts an
encrypted file as a drive. I then share that drive w/ write access so that
all computers can use the data equally. At the office it works fine.

At home when I try to mount a shared drive from a different computer I am
prompted with the pop-up window for a password. The user name supplied is
\\computername\Guest which I don't use. I do not have passwords on any
accounts on the home computers.

I am able to mount other shared folders, and I'm able to access info in
those folders. But I cannot even map a new drive on the same computer. (Do'nt
know if that ever worked.)

Only recent change was my ISP moved to Norton suite so I uninstalled
ZoneAlarm. But again I can see/access plenty of shared folders from one
computer to another, but just not these mounted drives.

Suggestions? And thanks!!!!

On the computer that owns the shared drive that you can't access:

1. Open a command prompt window (Start > Run > cmd).

2. Enter this command to enable the Guest account for access via the
network:

net user guest /active:yes

3. Remove any network password from the Guest account:

a. Enter the command "control userpasswords2".
b. Click Guest.
c. Click Reset Password.
d. Click OK without entering a new password.

Hi Steve,

I followed your instructions with no effect. I also tried changing Guest to
be in the Administrators group, and that did not help either.

What I have not tried is any reboot. But I did close the Windows Explorer on
the computer from which I'm trying to access the shared drive.

What should I try next? (Odd that I had no problem doing this at the office.
There one computer is XP Home and the other XP Pro. At home all 3 computers
are XP Home.)

Thanks, Richard

Since the last post I renamed the only user on the laptop to match one of the
users on the source computer from where I'm attempting to share. That did not
help.

I did notice that after changing the user name the folder under Documents
and Settings is named "Owner" -- so maybe that has no impact. Maybe I should
change the name back and then create a new user to match. (I'd then delete
the old user.)

It's odd that I can do this on one network fine but not the other....

You cannot simply rename a user account. As you have seen, doing this
doesn't change any of the underlying folders. Name the account back to
the way it was and create a new user account with the correct matching name.

Can I then delete the original account? Or must it be maintained as the
"master" admin account?

OK, I created a new account that matches one of the accounts on the computer
from which I'm attempting to share. That did not fix the problem.

Do I need to match the ORIGINAL account name of the sharing computer? And I
assume that name must be the original name in case it was ever changed, so do
I use the folder name from Documents and Settings (and change that account
name back to match)?

You are now posting in two separate threads which is not A Good Thing.
The other thread was started by someone else. You should stay in this
one so we can try and resolve your issue.

There is no reason to delete the extra user account. If it is the
built-in Administrator account, you *can't* delete it.

If you are having difficulties following my suggestions (and there is no
shame in this, we all have our areas of expertise) then take the time to
go through MVP Hans-Georg Michna's Small Network Troubleshooter here:

http://winhlp.com/wxnet.htm

Going through his troubleshooter will usually pinpoint the source of the
problem(s).

Sorry, Malke. I thought this thread had gone dead and saw that someone else
had the same problem. I thought that might be easier for all....

I sent through the tool you referenced and it is quite good, but my issue is
not solved. I did try the net use command to access a share and received the
error message: "Not enough server storage is available to process this
command."

So, I thought maybe I've created too many shares, and tried deleting a few
on the computer that is sharing. Not sure that is working, as the shared
folders do not seem to disappear from the exploded networking tree, even if I
try to delete them.

1. Is the potential issue too many shares?
2. Beyond unsharing, what else must be done to remove the share and regain
that memory space (if there is a limitation)?
3. The tool suggests problems may be with a cheap router (LinkSys) which I
have, but again I am able to share and access some folders fine, but others I
cannot.

Thanks for the patience and help. Next suggestion?

Honestly, I really have lost track of what you have and haven't done.
Networking can be confusing for people who haven't done it but it is
generally pretty straightforward. At this point, you'd be best off
having a local computer professional come on-site and set you up
properly. This will not be someone from BigComputerStore/GeekSquad. Get
recommendations from family, friends, colleagues.

I'm sorry that I was unable to help you. EOT for me.

Richard,

The "Not enough server storage ..." error is well known here. It's an obscure
registry setting, generally messed up by antivirus installation (typically NAV):

Chuck, thank you very much. I had finally googled the message and got pointed
to www.chicagotech.net/notenough.htm but it did not tell me how to set the
new parameter, and I was also clueless on removing uncessary terms on one of
the other ones. Your reference sent me to spots that gave me an idea of how
big to make it and a reminder that I must reboot the server to make it happen.

It just worked fine!!! I had also turned off Norton Anti-Virus for testing
and that didn't help.

Thank you again!!!
