Network up but no filesharing.

Hello -

I just purchased a HP Pavilion a1510n Desktop and I am having issues
access to filesharing on my home network.

This computer is a satelite of my main desktop which is a Gateway. That
computer has a Linksys Cable Modem and Router. There are two additional
computers on the network. None of these have issues sharing files or
printers with each other.

The new HP is connected to the network through a wireless card I
installed. It accesses the internet without a problem and it recognizes
the Network name however using Windows Explorer when I try to double
click on the network name to see the other computers I get the
following error message:

[Network Name] is not accessible. You might
not have permission to use this network resource. Contact
the network administrator to find out if you have access
permissions. A list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available.

I get a similar message when I try to access the new HP from the older
Gateway desktop. The Gateway reconizes the computer's name within the
workgroup but willnot allow file access.

Other info:
- All computers are running Windows XP Home Edition/SP2
- I can see the Notebook A under "view workgroup computers"
- I have set up shared folders on both machines
- No problem accessing internet on all computers
- Each notebook pings the other OK
- Logged in as an administrator -
- Same workgroup name
- Ran network setup wizard and wireless network setup on both new
machine and main desktop.

I tried calling HP but they do not address network issues.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Have you run the network setup wizard on each computer since adding the new
one to the network?

It might be your firewall blocking it. The other thing is make sure simple
file sharing is enabled in control panel | folder options | view tab.

Glen,

Advising folks to run the Network Setup Wizard on the existing computers, that
are having no problem, is a bit harsh.

A firewall on the new computer is indeed the best place to start.

Also, check for a consistent NetBT setting.

Now the problem being reported is with the browser, which gives the ability to
see servers in the workgroup. That has nothing to do with enabling or disabling
Simple File Sharing.
