I'm running XP Pro sp2 on both of my home computers. If I am "on" computer
A, I can see computer B files. However, if "on" computer B, I "cannot" see
computer A files. I have seen a lot of information on disabling anti-virus
and possible fire wall problems...could somebody help me get started with
some initial trouble shooting to step though this? much thanks!

Brian,

This is a rather frequently seen problem here. One of the most common causes of
this problem would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or other
security component. There are several other possibilities too, and any might be
the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

For more direct help, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Please let us know if any of these suggestions are of any help. What you learn
may help others in the future, and that's the purpose of these forums.

Hi Chuck, you provided a lot of information...here is my system information.
Thanks.

<SNIP>

Hi Brian,

To start, you have a classic segmented LAN. OFFICE_COMPUTER and ZACH_COMPUTER
are members of different workgroups, which makes each elect itself a master
browser.

Beyond that, and your first problem, is that OFFICE_COMPUTER has IPV6, aka
Teredo Tunnel. Start by removing that please.

Chuck,

When I go to Network Properties on my LAN connection. I see the following:
Client for Microsoft Networks
Eacfilt Driver (unchecked)
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

I read the article but am not sure how to get rid of IPV6 since I cannot see
it. fyi - I cannot uninstall "Eacfilt Driver" . Error message = Could not
uninstall the Eacfilt Driver component. Eacfilt Driver is still required by
the following components... "Filter Driver"

Thanks.

Brian,

Eacfilt is part of the Nortel VPN Client. Do you have a VPN intentionally
installed on that computer, and can you remove it? If you can (should) remove
it, then go to My Computer - Properties - Hardware tab - Device Manager. Under
Network Adapters, you should find the Nortel VPN Client (aka "Deterministic
Network" or the like). If you don't see anything interesting under Network
Adapters, select View - Show hidden devices.

Chuck, you are right; I have Nortel IPSEC. I use this for work
occassionally. I uninstalled this and the "EACFilter" network dissapeared
from the connection settings. It now shows:

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

I ran "IPCONFIG" and it removed the original Terredo Tunnel entry.

FYI - I looked at the Device Manager under Network Adapters, selected show
"hidden devices" and see the following:

3COM Lan card...
Direct Parallel

Eacfilt Miniport, Eacfilt Miniport #4, #5, #6, #7 (all with a yellow
exclamation sign). I disabled these but could not uninstall.

Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter
Wan Miniport (IP), (L2TP), (PPOE), (PPTP)

All appear to be functioning normally "except" the eacfilt I mentioned
above.

OKay, thanks. I will wait for the next set of directions.

Brian,

Tell us a little about your LAN. Why do you have 2 computers, each on different
workgroups (domains? which?)? Where in the Network Neighborhood tree on
ZACH_COMPUTER do you see OFFICE_COMPUTER?

How about an updated browstat and ipconfig for each, now that you've done a bit
of cleanup?

Brian,

Having removed the Nortel VPN, did you remove all components of it? Possibly a
firewall left behind?

Try again, and remove IPV6.

Then consider LSP / Winsock corruption.

OK, Brian!

I think I'm going to learn a bit from your situation. This is way cleaner.
# Both computers are on the same workgroup now.
# We see "There are 2 servers in domain CARADONNA GROUP" on both computers.
# We see "There are 2 domains in domain CARADONNA GROUP" on both computers.

In other words, both computers see each other (server broadcast datagrams), but
both think there's 2 domains (workgroups, and don't get confused here). Yet,
both computers acknowledge OFFICE_COMPUTER as the master browser.
# How many computers, total, are connected to your LAN? Just these two, or is
there a third that we haven't discussed?
# What operating system edition is OFFICE_COMPUTER running? ZACH_COMPUTER? If
XP Pro, is Simple File Sharing enabled? Is the Remote Registry service running?

# What did you change / what procedures did you run to get to this point?
# How long after doing what you did, did you run browstat?
# What exactly are you seeing in Network Neighborhood?

BC: I have 2 connected on a wired LAN and then occasionally I connect via
laptop (wireless).

BC: WinXP Pro SP2
ZACH_COMPUTER?

BC: Yes on both OFFICE_COMPUTER and ZACH_COMPUTER

Is the Remote Registry service running?
BC: I'm not sure what this is...? or how to check. I'll check your blog
link below.
BC: To the best of my knowledge...;-)

Removed the Nortel IPSEC Client
Cleaned up the protocols by ensuring only the "3" entries you specified. I
just kept looking and looking at it.
I put both computers under the "Caradonna Group" Workgroup rather then have
them in separate workgroups.
Ran both Browstat and IPCONFIG
# How long after doing what you did, did you run browstat?
BC: I basically made the above changes and rebooted the systems. I came
back about 1 hour later (only because I was working on some other things at
my home) and things appeared much, much better.
# What exactly are you seeing in Network Neighborhood?
BC: When you say "Network Neighborhood"; do you mean "Network Places"?
maybe semantics...? either way, I'll have to check when I get back home.
I'm working my other job right now... ;-)

BC: A couple of FYI items:

From OFFICE_COMPUTER (and my wireless laptop). I can now map to
ZACH_COMPUTER. However, I must map using "ZACH_COMPUTER\C" or applicable
file share. It will not allow me to map "directly" to "ZACH_COMPUTER".

From ZACH_COMPUTER. I can map to "OFFICE_COMPUTER" and see all the drives
I've enabled sharing on. In other words; I don't have to specify the "\C" at
the end of the computer name.
Chuck, I'm making progress...yahoo. Please see my responses to your
questions above...The FYI item I put at the end kind of stumps me at this
point.

Thanks!

Network Neighborhood / Network Places / My Network Places. Microsoft keeps
changing the terminology. That's the display on your computer, that's provided
by the browser subsystem.

This is great, Brian. I noted a bit above too.

Let's look at the FYI items. What exactly are you doing to "map to" a given
computer?
# You can enumerate the shares on a computer, by Start - Run -
"\\ZACH_COMPUTER", for instance.
# You can map a share, as in "net use x: \\ZACH_COMPUTER\C" (assuming that you
setup a share named "C" on ZACH_COMPUTER).
# You can NOT map a $ share, as in "net use x: \\ZACH_COMPUTER\C$" ("C$" is an
administrative share, and you cannot have administrative access, when SFS is
enabled).

Post the output from "net share" and "net use" on each computer. That should
give us some idea about the discrepancy noted in the FYI.

Hi Chuck,

From a previous question you had...Yes, I have remote registry running on
both Zach_computer and Office_Computer.

When I map a share from Office_Computer I use (Start, Run,
\\zach_computer\c). This works. However, when I use "\\zach_computer" it
does not. Regarding zach_computer. I have a c and g drive setup as a
share (the share hand is showing). One thing; is that when i run a
properties on the c/g drive it has a "security" tab and the "sharing" tab has
a couple of options (ie. maximum number of users) that I don't have on my
office_computer. Not sure how that got there or if that means anything...

When I map a share from Zach_Computer I use (Start, Run, \\office_computer)
and it brings back all the mapped shares.

I was unsuccessful in running "net share" and "net use" from the command
line. The information opened up in a command window but closed and I forgot
how to keep the window open to copy/paste.

Will wait further direction...and as always Thanks!!

Brian,

Last things first - when you run "net share" do it from a command window. Start
- Run - "cmd". Then, in sequence:
net share >c:\netshare.txt
notepad c:\netshare.txt
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/command-window.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/command-window.html

Now, if you have a Security and Sharing tab both, then you are probably not
running Simple File Sharing. That will make a major difference between what
shares can and can't be accessed. Or maybe you changed the security setup for
some folders with SFS disabled, then re enabled SFS?

Are you looking at "\\zach_computer\c", or "\\zach_computer\c$"? The latter is
not accessible under SFS, and Guest authentication.

Brian,

OK, let's try and diagnose the problem.

Take the following code (everything INSIDE the "#####" lines). Please DO NOT
include ANY portion of the "#####" lines. (Please verify computer names and ip
addresses, and ensure that they are up to date).

1. Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight
then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V)
into Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
2. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
3. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
4. Wait patiently.
5. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

Hi Chuck, Office_computer is below. a note on office_computer; it came back
with an "access 5" error but did finish running cdiag. not sure if this
means anything...Once again cannot map "zach_computer" from "office_computer"
without adding "\c" to the "zach\computer" mapping. THanks as always!

Here is what I ran for office_computer. Zach_computer in separate post due
to size limitations on posting.
