File Renaming

How can I rename an MPEG or a WMV file to something else so my firewall at
work won't recognize it and strip the file from my e-mail I am sending to
work. The firewall thinks these are malicious files. I used to just rename
the extension .MPEG in Windows 2000, but with XP it always keeps the original
extension.

Be careful doing what you describe. Corporate networks have some
stringent use requirements. Personal use of company computers is a
big problem. When it comes time for management to select personnel to
let go - Misuse of company networks is easy violation to prove. You
might be interested to know that companies have to "Right" to track
Internet Usage/Email and many do so vigorously. This includes logs
of site visits and most all email can be archived.
Most companies will tolerate a little abuse - Downloads to burn for
home use, occasional web mail checks....
It's not really my place to "Nose In" on this, but a little forewarning
might keep you off the unemployment line. Perhaps your work does
involve emailing Multimedia files - But that's the exception not the norm.

Rename it movie.mpeg.txt and then it should make it through. Then rename it
back to movie.mpeg.

You'll need to unhide file extensions for known file types before doing
this.

You'll find this in "My Computer". Navigate to "Tools | Folder Options...".
On the "View" tab, about halfway down in "Advanced Settings", you'll find
the checkbox labeled "Hide extensions for known file types". Uncheck it.
Then, when you change the extension, don't delete the current extension,
simply add ".txt" or whatever new extension you want.

Wouldn't it simpler and more to the point for you to ask your
employer's network administrator for the best ways to compromise the
network's security? Then you'll know exactly how to get garbage past
the firewall.
