File renamer needed ...

Rob Keel

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help please? ...

I have a partition which holds a collection of MP3's. Within the
partition are directories named in the format "Artist Name - Album
Name". In each of these directories are the track filenames in the
format "Track Number - Track Title".mp3.

What I would like to do is rename the files in each directory by adding
the directory name to the beginning of the filename so I end up with
filenames in this format ... "Artist Name - Album Name - Track Number -
Track Title".mp3

I use Lupas Rename for renaming batches of files but can't find a way
of doing this using Lupas Rename. Can anyone recommend a utility which
can do this please?

Many thanks.

ZTree. It's shareware, though, not freeware.

You can rename them with MP3tag from
http://www.mp3tag.de/en/index.html.

If your MP3's allready have valid MP3 tags you can rename them
directly. Otherwise you can set the tags by 'importing' them from the
directory and file name. After that you can rename them using the
imported tags.

http://www.scarabee-software.net/en/siren.html
http://www.scarabee-software.net/en/download.html

Siren renamer can add the directory name to the beginning of the filename:
Extract from help file:
%p : the parent directory
%p2 : the grand parent directory
%pn : the nth level parent directory
%P : the full path to the file

Group of "id3v1 tag" information: mp2, mp3, mpc
%mt : the title
%ma : the artist
%mA : the album
%my : the year
%mc : the comment
%mT : the track number
%mg : the genre

Group of "audio tag" information: mp2, mp3, mpc, ogg, wma, wav
(%M and %A variable prefixes are equivalent)
%At : the title
%Aa : the artist
%AA : the album
%Ay : the year
%Ac : the comment
%AT : the track number
%An : the number of tracks
%Ak : the track (text)
%Ag : the genre
%Ap : the composer
%Ao : the original artist
%AC : the copyright
%Au : the URL
%Ae : encoded by
%AIf : the format of an attached image

This program provides rapid MP3 (ID3v1, ID3v2) and Ogg/Speex/Flac Vorbis
tags editing and file renaming functions. Mass Tag editing is done using
special variables and Regular Expressions.

Undo and preview for all changes, capitalization, search and replace,
use parts of file name or directory structure for tags. Directory
renaming and restructure based on tags. All customizable and
configurable.

Get the artist and album information from the freedb database over the
internet.

Play your mp3 files in Winamp or internal player while editing Tags. It
will auto pause and resume Winamp when renaming or updating files.

It can also be used to easily create WinAmp-compatible playlists
(M3U files), Information (NFO) files, Parity archive (PAR) data
recovery files, Simple File Verify (SFV) and Sound Verification (.SV)
checksum files.

You can export and import ID3 tags to and from XML and comma delimited
text files, verify CRC/MD5 checksums and more.

Originally it was designed for managing audiobooks but could be used for
any mp3 and ogg files.

ZTree is a GREAT file manager. Clone, sorta, of the old XTREE, but with
full LFN support, etc. A WONDERFUL text-based file manager. I don't
recommend it for mass renaming of files, tho.

foobar2000's Masstagger is great for this sort of thing.

Lupas Rename will do this.
Be sure you have the most recent version (April 2005)
Check Insert before filename
Right-click in field
Column data
Path
First subpath from the right
after the code that appears in this field, you can add your space-dash-
space

I agree with everything you say - except the last bit, of course, since
I did recommend it. I use ZTree every day, so I thought I would check
out the renaming facilities. They are very extensive - check out rename
mask in the help file. May not be as easy to use as some of the
specific renaming programs, but extremely versatile. Can easily handle
the OP's needs.

Excellent. Thanks Tom.

Thanks to all for the help. Much appreciated.

Thoss,

Thanks for the info on mass renaming. Sorry, I had an old version of
Ztree. Downloaded the SW and it works great for renaming.
Many thanks & sorry again.
