File Removal

I have a file sitting on my Add/Remove program that has been removed
manually, every time I try to install the updated version of this it says
that I need to delete the older version first, I have tried to do this in
every way I can think of to no avail, when I try to remove with Add/Remove it
says that it cannot find the windows installer package so is unable.
Any help/Advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

This may happen when files have been deleted from the %windir%\Installer
folder or when that software had been installed by the Windows Installer
Version 2 prior to updating to Version 3. Reinstalling the previous (older)
version (same folder) and then uninstalling usually helps.
Any help/Advice would be appreciated.

If the older installation source is not available:
"Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/en-us

Handle with care and make sure that the latest Windows Installer for
WinXP has been installed.

"Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) is available"

^^^^^^^
Should read "Program version" (rather than Windows Installer version).
