File Properties Search

L

Len

In explorer, or my photos folder, when I right click a
file, select properties, then the summary tab (simple
view), there are input boxes for 'title, author, comments,
keywords, subject, and category' (category is greyed
out/not selectable).

Once you enter data into all or any of those boxes, does
there then become a way to do a search on this data, i.e.
search for a comment, a keyword, etc.. ?

I've tried the standard search options (all or part of
file name, word or phrase in file) but this does not find
any of the files where I have entered a comment or keyword.

The types of files I'm dealing with are images,
either .jpg, or .tif, which I use windows pictures and fax
viewer to display.

Is there a way in Windows XP to search this properties
data, or do you need some other outside software ??

thanks for any help / suggestions

What are you talking about ? I RESPECTFULLY answered your
reply in the other newsgroup on this topic, saying that
your suggestion is not the answer to my question. Of
course I've tried basic Windows search actions. Only a
STUPID person wouldn't try that first. If you would bother
to read responses to ALL your replies, maybe YOU won't
continue to post STUPID replies !

Answers don't change just because you are too stupid to try.

David, if you actually try what you say, it will not work,
at least it didn't for me. Try it out yourself - enter
something in file > properties > summary > any field
(author, title, keywords, etc) , save the file, then try
entering any term you just entered under summary, and
search will not find that file.

If it works for you, please RESPECTFULLY tell me what I
might be doing wrong (p.s. I always double check my
spelling and the areas/directories to search)

thank you !

That's how you do it.

Cause it works for me. Try using XP as this is an XP group and XP's search is different to earlier versions.

David, I am using XP Home edition, V 5.1, SP2 - what are
you using ? If different than mine, maybe it's a bug only
for my version.

Every XP's the same search..

You can't not search properties.

If you turn on indexing server you can use

@DocKeyword"the red dog"

Syntax to only query the keyword field. See Indexing Server help under Computer Management in Administrative Tools. With Indexing off all properties are queried that you can view in Explorer.

David,

I have never heard of the 'indexing server' before. I
searched on it and was overwhelmed by how much info there
is on it and what it could do. It looks like it's a steep
learning curve for a 'non-programmer', non power user',
but I'll check it out.

How do you 'turn on ' indexing server ?, and, if like your
reply says, with indexing off 'all properties' are
queried, then I don't understand why my search for
keywords is not working, unless my index server is 'on',
but how would I know ?

thanks

David,

Just replying to close out this thread and let you know
that after a reply to my post in the 'photo' newsgroup, I
gave it one last try, and, without my making any changes
relative to index server settings, this time the search
worked (on the comments field). What I was doing wrong
before I do not know, but you were right, you can search
file properties. I did check index server in control
panel, admin tools, and it was off.

My apologies for any previous misunderstandings, and
thanks for your help.
