File & Printer Sharing and MS Client for windows

Fred S

Hi,

Friend has MS Client for windows and File and printer sharing on his
system and he does not connect to any other computers on a network.

He does use cable Internet but no network nor file and printer sharing.

Can we remove those two in order to speed up his boot time - I believe
those items are slowing things down and might not be needed at least for
now.

If we remove MS Client for Windows and File/printer sharing will that
have any effect on being able to use the cable Internet service?

Thanks, Fred

Replied in m.p.windowsxp.hardware. Please don't multipost - if you need to
post to multiple groups, it's best to crosspost instead, by posting a single
message to a handful of relevant groups (separate the NG names with commas)
so that everyone can follow the thread. This makes it easier for everyone,

Hi,

Sorry about the cross post but I thought I was in the networking group
and posted in HW by mistake.

Anyway, I asked the questions because I've run AdAware, Spybot, virus
checks, etc. and then removed net meeting and that improved the time it
takes to get to Windows. So I was wondering about the other two, MS
Client for Windows and File & Printer Sharing.

In your other post, you mentioned that you were running Win98 SE.... as I
mentioned there, you should post 9x questions in groups dedicated to same.
That said, no, I don't think your plan will have much effect, but it can't
hurt. Msconfig will tell you what's in your startup.
