There is no need and no point in renaming .exe, .avi, .rtf or .doc
files - leave them as they are.

Most files have extensions. You probably did not see them because
of the way "My Computer" was configured on your PC.

Not sure if you see whaat i am saying, go to your dektop and right click anywhere and ake new microsoft word document, i bet now you don't have ''New Microsoft Word Document.doc'' but have New Microsoft Word Document. I ave the .doc in the fle name, and everyhng else!

Try control panel/ folder options/ view tab and tick "hide extensions for
know file types"

I see what you mean but I wonder why it matters to you,
seeing that you like to take a very casual approach to
the way words are spelt. I suspect what you see is the
result of spyware/malware/viruses, as you suggest in your
subsequent post. It could also have been caused by you
using a "Registry Cleaner", often called "Registry Wrecker".
But let's face it: It's really a very, very minor issue and it
is certainly not caused by Windows itself. Try a spyware/
malware forum.

They were always there. By default, Windows turns off displaying the file
extensions (a very poor choice, as far as I'm concerned) and you apparently
chose the option to turn that display back on (which is a good thing to do).

manually opened with its program.

Despite the warning, you can rename whatever you want. It doesn't hurt to
rename the part of the file of the file name before the dot, but only rarely
does it make any sense to change the part after the dot (the extension).
That's because Windows uses the extension to determine what program to open
it with. So if you double-click a file called something.doc, Windows will
open it with Microsoft Word. If you rename it to something-else.doc, there's
no problem; Windows will still open it with Word. But if you rename it to
something.xxx, Windows has no idea what to open it with.
