file corrupt, clips disappeared

I was having a problem with WMM freezing, and I would have to alt cntrl del
to get out. When I got back in, I got an error that the import file was
corrupt and was going to be replaced. Now all the video clips I've beed
editing and adding for the project for the last month are all gone. I
contacted Sony, who tried to do some kind of restore on all the empty files
in the temp directory, and then they told me they couldn't restore, and that
I was going to have to reformat my hard drive also. I HAVE to get the clips
back, I don't have another month to finish this project. I saw on another
message to restore from the MEDIATAB0.DAT or MEDIATAB1.DAT. I did a search
and can't find those files. I have V6 sp1 for Vista. Can someone help with
this? I didn't realize that when I saved, and then copied to the external
hard drive to be safe, that the clips didn't get saved also.

Correct...the .mswmm project file does
not include the source files. The source
files remain in their original locations
they were imported from.

If your source files are no longer on your
hard drive I'm thinking you will have to find
more source files and start over. Anyway...
the following article may be useful:

There is mention of a MEDIATAB1.DAT
file in the following PapaJohn Newsletter:

or...

(Scroll down to: Inside the Collection
Database (MEDIATAB1.DAT)...)

Thank you for your reply. I will look at the articles. All my original
source doc's are there. What I don't have are the clips I pulled from the 15
hours of video. I want that back. Can I do that?

You still have the 'original' source files?

Do you have the '.mswmm' project file?

I have the original source file and the 2 min of project I already had. I
don't have the 35 other clips that were going on the project bd next, and I
don't have time to watch another 15 hours of soccer games looking for 10
second clips for the banquet. I want to know if there is any way to retreive
the clips which didn't save with the project in the vista v6 of the movie
maker. For some reason the xp version saved the clips but the vista version
doesn't, just keeps them in temp unless movie maker decides to delete them.

Sounds like you do not have the .mswmm
project file? If you saved your project...the
..mswmm file may be in your Videos folder.
Or you could search your hard drive and see
if you could find it.

If you find the .mswmm project file you can
open it in Movie Maker and maybe your
project will still be viable.

Otherwise...I think starting over might be the
best bet.

thank you, I will search again for the .mswmm file, but if I have to start over, what file do I need to save in order to keep the clips so that they don't disappear again? My assumption is that they don't save with the project file, and stay in the temp directory. I want to save it and back it up on my external hard drive.

Of course...your original source files must
be accessible and the save you need to be
concerned with is the .mswmm project file.
File / Save Project As...or...F12

The .mswmm file does not save or include
clips but what it does is save the "Recipe"
so to speak...it remembers all the editing
you have done...and it records the path to
the original source files...so they must always
be accessible.

I think one reason people sometimes have
problems is because thay create projects
that are way too large. My opinion is that if
you create several smaller projects...save
each one in a movie format (.wmv or ..avi)
and then re-import all the saved movie clips
to create the final project...less errors will
result.

And it's important that your source files are
compatible with Movie Maker:

thus.. save all your favorite clips avi's.. on a alternate harddrive so when you use 'windows movie maker' you have your root entact.
