File by Last Name in Contacts - How?

G

Guest

I have Microsoft Outlook 2002. I recently moved the files to a new computer
after my old one died. In the old computer the contacts names were filed by
Last Name, First Name. On the new computer the contacts names are filed by
First Name, Last Name.

I want to change it back to Last Name, First Name.

I posted on this forum a week or so ago. The reply was to go to control
panel/mail/email accounts/change directory/ then tick the option to file
names as Last, First.

I tried that but nothing happened. Any other ideas on how to change this?

Thanks.

Russ -

Thanks for the reply. Does the view matter? I am really not sure what the
different views are, but I suppose I would want current view or detailed
current view.

Of course the view matters. The instructions you quoted were to sort the
Outlook Address Book view, not your Contacts Folders. Which do you want to
sort? If it is the Contacts Folders, which of the 13 standard views?
Do your File As... fields appear correctly in your Contact Records? If not,
did you import these Contacts instead of moving them correctly?

I apologize for my ignorance about Outlook. I was calling the Contacts folder
my address book. I forgot that they were two different things.

I am not really sure which view, so let's say current view address cards.
Where would my file as fields be? I imported the Contacts using the import
device to transfer from my old harddrive to the new one via a USB cable. Did
I do something wrong? Again, thanks.

The File As field is right on the first page of the Contact Record.
Importing Contacts is not recommended: too much data is lost or changed
(like the File As... field, for instance).
Normally you would just open the PST file containing the Contacts you wand
to use and copy them into your current PST file.

Okay. I see the "file as" and on most contact cards it is First Last. Do I
have change them individually or is their a global way of doing so?

Well, it took only about 10 minutes to change them mannually. Thanks, Russ,
for your help.

Life is always easier when you have a small Contacts Folder :)
The take home lesson here is do not import Outlook Data from one
installation to another. Only use import if you need to bring in data from
another file format.
