File Association Woes

This may be a stupid question. I've done some Google Groups searching for
an answer and can't find a thing. I've accidentally associated a file that
shouldn't have any associated type on it at all with one of my programs.
I've double-clicked it and it asks what program I want to use to open it.
This once, I want to use a program to open it. However, I forgot to
uncheck the Always Use This Program checkbox. Now, this file type is
associated with this program. In previous versions of Windows, I've been
able to go to the File Types and just remove this. However, in Windows
2000, it doesn't appear to list custom associations here. It just lists
associations either made by default or by installed programs. Is there any
place in the registry to remove this association? One weird item: running
assoc for this file type returns that there is no program associated with
that file type. However, this file type still shows up with my program's
icon as if it was associated, and it still opens that program when this
file type is double-clicked. Any ideas would be most awesome.

Thanks!
Phil

Can you be a little more specific?

Sure. I downloaded a .jpg file that had an extension of .002. I guess the
poster thought it would be smart to name his series of images with the
order number IN the extension, but that's neither here nor there. I
double-clicked the image and chose to open the file with my image viewer,
IrfanView, but forgot to uncheck the Always Use This Program checkbox, so
now all .002 files want to be opened in IrfanView. This association
doesn't appear on the File Types list under Tools-Folder Options from
Windows Explorer, so I'm wondering where I can remove this. It's no big
deal, as I don't really have any need to open .002 files in any other
outside program, but this has just become more of a curiosity as to how to
remove this.

Hope this helps,
Phil

This is a user-specific assocaition and is stored in the registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.002.
You can get rid of it by deleting that key and its subkeys.

Thank you Gary,
I just made it back to him.
Glad he already had the answer.
