I want to fdisk or format my disk to replace XP Pro with 2000 Pro.How is this done?
I tried to format in the command prompt but but it stated the disk was mounted but it could not force a dismount.
Is recovery console the way to go.I have never done this before.
I tried to do a repair with my Win XP Pro disk but I mistakenly installed a new copy over 1st OS. There is now one in C:\windows and C:\winnt folders.I just deleted the c:\windows folder[???] .OS still boots from C:\winnt folder.

One cannot install the older Windows 2000 over the newer Windows XP.
A "clean install" of Windows 2000 is required:

The Windows 2000 CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows 2000 to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing W2K.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows 2000, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

===> Accessing Motherboard BIOS

2. Insert your Windows 2000 CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows 2000.

5. Clean Install Windows

6. After Windows 2000 is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates", begining with SP4.

7. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows 2000 compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

Download a WIN98SE bootable floppy from www.bootdisk.com. Create a floppy
disk, boot from that floppy and run fdisk and format from there.

No need to format with the Win98 disk (which would be a FAT32 format
anyway), just use FDISK to delete the partitin and boot the Win2K CD,
it'll do the rest.

There was, is, and never will be Windows 2000 Professional.

Either as a part of a reinstall of the system after booting the XP CD
direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install.
When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the
current partition(s). In your case then power off and start over with
the 2000 setup

Or use a Win98 startup floppy and its FDISK to delete partitions
(non-DOS if NTFS)

Nice try, but that actually refers to Windows 2000 Professional Home.

All the other OS options there also have the word Home in the title.

I don't think that qualifies them as a version.

The word "Home" could refer to a Home page, but when I pick Windows
2000 Home, it displays generic information including upgrades for
Win2003 Server. The Win2K Pro home page just talks about Windows 2000
and does not contain the phrase Windows 2000 Professional anywhere on
it.

I say again: There is no Windows 2000 Pro.

I missed the beginning of this thread, but if you are claiming
that there is no product called Windows XP Professional, you are
very much wrong. I ran it for several years, as I'm sure many
others here have also.

The word "home" on the title of the page quoted above *does*
clearly refer to a home page.

A Google search on "Windows XP Professional" turns up 1,290,000
hits and should quickly confirm this.

Does it trouble you that you're so incapable of reading a web site?

Choosing the Right Operating System

Windows 2000 Professional Home
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/professional/

As the rest of the world knows, Win2K Pro is the workstation
version of the OS.
