fdd ? doubt it's recoverable

Noname

3.5" floppy disk.
Formatted in XP.

When attempting to read the disk reports "the disk in drive 'A' is not
formatted".

Properties reports RAW and 0 disk space used and on second attempt to view
the disk fails to open. The disk has the sound of a seek when attempting to
open.

My question is how to recover the data given that it cannot be opened by XP,
is there another way to open the data?

Re backup, computer failures ... I agree, this floppy was given to me by
someone who works for a non profit and indicated she was "non-techy".

The best chance will be in the drive in which it was originally written.
Either that drive or yours might be a bit out of alignment.

If that's not an option, then there are plenty of pieces of software
that will attempt to read the binary data on the drive and salvage
whatever is possible. Peter Norton made a fortune dealing with that
sort of thing.

You might also consider the possibility of dust buildup in your drive
(or hers). Sometimes a puff of air in the right spot will work wonders.

I think you should try to get another copy of the original data.
As it is you cannot even be sure the data you want is or was ever on
that floppy disk. If that is not an option and the data is important,
consider professional data recovery. Floppy disk recovery from weak
signals and misaligned drives should be an automated process by now.

Dunno, its arguable if there's enough of a market to be viable.

Try ResQfloppy, from http://resq.co.il/iv_tools.php#Resqfloppy Read the
incorporated text file for how to use the utility.

Try reading the data in different PCs.
