Fax strangeness

I have a an XP media center pc that has the ms fax console software
installed. I receive faxes and store them in a directory. I also
import them into a document management app that uses OLE to manage the
link. A few months ago whenever I try to open a fax from this app it
freezes. I've used procmon to see what's going on and insteead the
fax viewr it's trying to run the fax file using MS Word.

I've tried numerous things but have discovered that if I uninstall the
fax software reboot reinstall and reboot againg everything is back to
normal. The catch is that of course within a day or two I'm right
back to it calling Word again. I've tried comparing the registry
before and after but don't see a smoking gun. (Not that I'm a
registry expert by any means.)

Not sure what to try next - looking for ideas and suggestions.

Thanks very much in advance!

Did you try .. right clicking on a fax, select 'open with',,, choose your
fax software executable and select 'always open this ... "?
This would be easier than uninstalling/reinstalling but I don't know if it
will correct the problem permanently

I don't remember if I tried that but I did go into the file types
manager and reset the .tif file type to the Office Image viewer. It
didn't have any effect.
