Fax software winxp pro

I have a reg ole US Robotics 56K modem. If I try to run the phone linto the
modem and out to the phone, their is no dial tone. I have tried splitting
the line and doing that way, same result. Before winxp, I always used either
winfax or mightyfax to send and receive gfaxes manually mostly. Why is the
modem grabbing the phone line like this? Never happened before. This happens
with NO fax software installed at all. I use a cable modem for the web. But
I used to (6 months ago, with xp pro) use a dialup and there was no
problems. What could cause this?

could it be a virus dialing a premium rate number ??

Try another modem. With the modem not working it should default to the
phoneline. JJ
