Fax in Xp

I had my computer built for me by a reputible computer business in another
town about 6 hours from me. I have since moved. He put the Windows XP Home
on my system without the "Fax" component. I didn't realize it at the time. I
have since moved. I have verified that my computer is running a Validated
copy of Windows XP but I was never given a "disk" from this computer store. I
would like to add the "Fax" component now to my system but what do I do. When
I attempted to add it, it wanted a disk which I do not have. I have contacted
the business but it has been sold and the new owner is not willing to help
me-not a very nice guy, and he knows I had it built there. So can someone
tell me how I can add the Fax component to my system. I was told I should
have added before adding the service pack 2...is this true? And if so can I
remove the service pack 2 and put it back on after I add the fax component?

Thanks for your help

Don't mess up your system by fiddling around with SP2. If the FAX
install dialog is asking for a file on the XP disk you might borrow same
from a friend.

An alternative would be to install an inexpensive FAX utility. Google
for "fax software."

It is possible to add it post-sp2, by copying the requested files (from a
Windows cd or i386 folder) to their relevant locations prior to using 'Add /
Remove Windows components', but alot simpler before adding sp2.

As Bob I said, you will need the XP installation CD at some point so why not
take care of that now. You should have received the CD when you purchased
the computer or some means of restoring the system, either a recovery CD or
a hidden partition on the hard drive with an image of the drive as received.

If you have none of these then buy a copy of XP, or contact MS to see if
they can help. Sometimes they will help if the OEM business doesn't exist
anymore.

Bob I gave you link for how to replace missing CD. If they won't help then
buy another copy.

Good to hear, happy computing!
Ty all so much for the help. I have contacted Microsoft and there is no
problem they will replace my missing software. I just had to give them an
"OEM" number or something but my software is on the way. Again Thank You
