Fan Adaptor to Fit Larger Fan to CPU.

The fan on my CPU has become loud and may be running out of balance judging
by the noise that it makes. The fan measured 40mm so I decided to use a low
revving 60mm fan with an adaptor. Now that I have come to fit the fan I
have found that the original fan that I measured as 40mm (from the centre of
the screw holes) is actually a 50mm fan (measured edge to edge). I live and
learn! The problem I now have is that although 40mm to 60mm adaptors are
easy to find, no one seems to stock 50mm to 60mm adaptors. Can anyone
advise where I can buy one? Failing that can anyone recommend a top
quality, perfectly balanced 50mm fan?

Actually you might find that simply cleaning and lubeing the inside of motor
repairs them to almost "as new"..Simply remove the decal,remove the C-clip,
then plastic washer,rubber,plasic washer (used as bearings),then seperate the
motor from housing-2 pieces.Clean the parts with Q-tips and Isopropyl
70%,this
is also the same solution for cleaning cassette tapes,heads,cds.Once cleaned,
apply small amount of grease on all plastic washers,pivot axle,oil is
ok...Reasemble
all,its pretty simple,and they'll last another year or two.

In the old days, fans were mounted directly into the fins
of the heatsink, with self-tapping metal screws. It might
be possible to do this with the 60-mm fan, if its corner
mounting holes over the radiator fins. And as for finding
balanced fans, one could usually find one by inspection,
i.e., holding it in the hand while it is powered on. But
the tolerances do not need to be that precise.
