false email notification at log on screen

about a week ago, there was a message in my hotmail inbox
and msn messenger let me know, i retrieved it, and it
still said i had a message. I logged off, and the
notification carried on to the logon screen. I finally
got msn to know i didn't have an email by
ctrl+alt+deleting, and "end process" until it was off the
list. I thought i had solved the problem, but i logged
off, and windows still thinks i have an email message in
the hotmil account that my msn messenger is associated
with. it's not hurting anything, but pissing me off
something terrible

Download and install TweakUI:

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP (TweakUI)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

After installing, go to Start > Programs > PowerToys for Windows XP >
TweakUI. Expand "Logon" and uncheck "Show unread mail on Welcome screen".

Note: Unread message alerts may indicate you have unread messages not only
in Outlook Express, but Hotmail and/or MSN email accounts as well.
