My problem is exactly the same: in a direct phone-line
connection computers update correctly, but I cannot update
throw a proxy (but I can surf with IE and the correct net
configuration, what's currently in the problematic
computer)

I need to know the IP address of the update site too -
otherwise I can't setup firewall rules to allow updates.
Anyone have a clue?

Some have found that setting Internet Explorer to "automatically detect" the
type of internet connection--has fixed this issue.

See if spynet.com resolves to a static IP address--that's what I'd try if
this is really a requirement. The help file has lots of firewall config
information, some of which (names of executables) is wrong.
