Failed Windows Update for Flash causing annoying error on bootup..

On bootup one of my users gets the following message which I think is due to
a failed Windows update:

"An error has occurred while setting up
"C:\windows\system32\macromed\flash\flash.ocx." This error has been logged,
the installation will continue."

I uninstalled Flash from add/remove programs, deleted the Macromed folder
and its contents, then rebooted to no avail. I also tried copying the
Macromed folder and its contents from a computer on which the Flash plugin
was working properly.

Perhaps I should try to delete this half finished/unsuccessful Windows
update, then run Windows update using the custom option, and tell Windows
update to ignore this particular update.

Try uninstalling / reinstalling Flash Player using the uninstaller at

At your suggestion I used the Flash uninstaller, which curiously left the
Macromed folder behind. I deleted the Macromed folder too and then rebooted,
but alas, no luck. I forgot to mention explicitly that the error dialog box
has the title "Windows Update." My apologies. So anyhow, I have to find a
way to get Windows to stop attempting to finish applying this failed update,
but not sure yet how.

Did you then install the new version of Flash?

First I would like to apologize for the long delay. It's been fairly busy
and I guess this particular annoyance hasn't been my priority. Also I
clicked "yes, this post answered my question" absent-mindedly. Actually the
user still has this issue and I have installed the latest version of Flash as
recommended.

Sorry, I can't help further because of ignorance. I don't have Flash
installed.

Don't worry, I think it's fixed now. I’m not sure exactly what I did that
fixed it but I hope I never see this error again.

Thanks for your suggestions and input.

Just for my future reference…

- ran net stop wuauserv from command prompt

- Deleted SoftwareDistribution folder at C:\windows

- Renamed windowsupdate.log at C:\windows

- ran net start wuauserv from command prompt

- reran windows update from http://www.windowsupdate.com and did the express
install option

- reinstalled Flash 9IE from our Patch Manager software

- rebooted
