Failed to renew IP Address!

Whenever I try to repair the connection by going into
Control Panel, Network Connections, then select 'Local
Area Connection', and click 'Repair this Connection' in
Windows XP, I get a message saying: "The following
operations failed: Renewing the IP Address". Any
suggestions/explanations to why this is happening?

I have a cable modem but no router due to the fact that
it is no longer working. I have 2 other computers which
both work just fine. I tried the
ipconfig, /release, /renew commands but still didn't work
because every time i typed in the /renew command, it
says "unable to contact dhcp server".

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The problem may be that your cable company is only allowing you to have two
addresses. The router you used to have would have made all your computers
look like one address. Since the router doesn't work any more, I'm guessing
that you have just connected all the computers to a hub and connected that
to the cable modem.

Since at least some cable modems ALSO cache information about which
computers have gotten IP addresses, you need to do three things to see if
this is your problem.

1) On both of the computers that work, run "ipconfig /release" from a
command prompt, then unplug the network cable from one of them.
2) Restart your cable modem. Do this by unplugging it or turning the power
switch off, waiting about 30 seconds and then turning it back on.
3) On the two computers that are now connected (one working, one broken),
open a command prompt and run "ipconfig /renew"

If both computers are able to get IP addresses, plug the computer that used
to work back in. It should now be UNABLE to get an IP address. If this is
what happens for you, then you'll have to either replace your router or call
your cable company and see if they can set things up so that you can get
more than two IP addresses. Usually getting additional IP addresses comes
at the cost of a higher monthly fee and sometimes is not possible, depending
on your cable company.

If the broken computer is STILL broken, then reply back and we'll work from
there.

My cable company is Time Warner's Road Runner. I haven't
yet connected all computers to a hub so i just plug in
one computer at a time to the cable modem. But I am
thinking about just buying a new router. Also, do you
know if my cable company supports more than 2 ip
addresses? Thanks.

Also forgot to mention that this is a new cable modem
which I just received today because the technician from
the cable company came to us and replaced it with a new
one because of no cable light.

I'm sorry, I don't know offhand if Road Runner supports that or not.

But, what I said about the modem remembering what had been connected to it
still holds true. So, try the steps I mentioned before except only use the
computer that doesn't currently work instead of two computers, since you
don't have a hub.
