Can't Renew IP Address

I get the message "Can't Renew IP Address" when I try to
Repair my LAN Connection.

When I run ipconfig /renew from the command prompt I get
the message "An error occurred while renewing interface
Local Area Connection. An operation was attempted on
something that is not a socket".

I have 2 computers running XP Home Edition, one is a
desktop attached by cat 5 cable to a wireless router; the
other is a desktop connected via a wireless device on the
USB port. The wireless router is connected to a cable
modem.

The computer w/ the wireless connection is able to access
the internet, the other computer cannot and that's the
one I can't renew the IP address (its auto set to
169.something). Also, I am able to connect a laptop via
cat 5 cable to the same router and access the internet.
