Fable wont start

I bought fable today, off the reccomendation of a friend, and it sounds like
a great game, but it wont start, and im hoping someone can give me a fix that
will work. The opening scenes work fine, im assuming because they are windows
media player files, but after that i get an error that says "fable.exe has
encountered a problem and needs to close." Sort of genereic, leaving me
wondering what the problem was. I went through the MS knowledge base, and
found an article pretaining to this exact error, then tried all the fixes
listed there, but none of them worked. Fixed included: update video card,
uninstall/reinstall, mess with the directX settings several times, and
something with the sound card, among others. If anybody knows a way to fix
this, please share it. Thanks in advance!

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the Task Manager, click on the processes tab.
Try closing any process that's running under your username (ie not system or
services or taskmgr as that's the application you're currently using) and
see what happens when you run the game then. Just make sure any documents
and stuff is saved first.

If Fable works then, reboot so all the applications are running again, and
start the
process again, closing 1 or 2 down at a time until the games will start and
weed at any potential problematic application. If you're not sure what
application it is that's causes the error post the name of it here and we'll
point you in the right direction.

Have a look in the event viewer if an error is posted there:

right click your 'My Computer' icon, choose 'manage'
click on the plus sign next to 'Event Viewer'
click on 'Application'
look for red dots with white crosses, double click these until you find
the message for the error of Fable
there is usually a short cut provided at the bottom of the window
(scroll down if necessary)
click on it (you have to be online) and the help center will open with
(hopefully) helpful advice
