F-Prot & WinXP Home multiple User problems

I just built a new PC for some friends using WinXP Home SP2.

I created 3 Users and ran all of the appropriate Windows Updates before
installing F-Prot for Windows 3.16F.

The problem I'm having is F-Prot's Real Time Scanner and Updater don't
load for all of the users.

I can go into F-Prot and click on Real Time Scanner and it will load
along with Updater when I reboot into that user but they turn off in the
other 2 Users.

I ended up setting up Administrator but it's only accessible in Safe
Mode. Do I need to reinstall F-Prot using the Administrator account or
what?

Any ideas?

Windows for 5 or 6 years. I checked F-Prot's FAQ first before posting
here. There's no problem installing or updating. I tried to send F-Prot
a message but I don't know if it went through.

I reinstalled from Safe Mode - no change. I uninstalled F-Prot, DL
another copy of F-Prot Windows from F-Prot's web site and reinstalled it
in Safe Mode.

What happens now is that FPAVUPDM.EXE and F-STOPW.EXE load for each user
and work when I first boot the system but they shut down when I Log Off
and Switch Users. All 3 users are set up as Administrators while I'm
configuring the system.

Mode. (Just in case it matters: I'm using XP Professional.) Then I set file
access permissions as per F-Prot's instructions.

What happens now is that FPAVUPDM.EXE and F-STOPW.EXE load for each user
and work when I first boot the system but they shut down when I Log Off
and Switch Users. All 3 users are set up as Administrators while I'm
configuring the system.

I have an administration account and two restricted user accounts. If I
select "log off" and then _switch_ to another account, FPAVUPDM.EXE and
F-STOPW.EXE are not running, as you describe. But if I select "log off",
then log out and log in to a different account, everything is running fine,
i.e. FPAVUPDM.EXE and F-STOPW.EXE are active.

It's a well known issue and the problem is with the XP "fast" user switching.

Open User Accounts from the XP control panel, go to "change the way users log on
or off" and clear the box to use fast user switching. This should resolve the
problem, and users switching will now be done the old way, that is by logging
off the current user before logging in the new one.

Thanks Zvi. I've been following your posts since the old CServe AV
Forum. This is the first time I've set up a multi user PC and the first
time (and last) I've used XP Home.

Fast user switching without AV protection - so much for the highly
touted XP security!

I'll make the changes and take away Administrator privileges as soon as
I finish install some more software and fine tuning the system.

This is the first time I've set up a multi user PC and the first
time (and last) I've used XP Home.

Fast user switching without AV protection - so much for the highly
touted XP security!

IMO, XP's fast user switching, as well as "system restore" and some of the SP2
security center features, are half baked. The problem experienced haunts quite
a few real-time AV when running under XP. The cause is the way these
applications hook the file system and their need to be exclusive when they kick
in. Users fast switching doesn't reinitialize all user dependent services and
some of these services are still assigned to the previous user when switching in
fast mode.

The fact that XP offers all sorts of features doesn't imply that you must use
them all. ;-) Like a car capable of speeding to 140 MPH ...

I practice Safe Hex and use fine tuned Win98SE systems most of the time.
When I do encounter a problem with 98 I can easily fix it where it can
take hours or even days to repair an NT system.

I have XP Pro on several laptops for wireless compatibility and I run
Win2k on my engineering PC for software compatibility.
