Extreemly inaccurate Ink level monitor on HP6840

A few months ago I purchased an HP 6840. It works very well but the ink
status monitor is seems to be totally usless as a measure of the ink
remaining in the cart.

I got a warning that the ink was low after only a few weeks and the gauge
showed about 3% remaining - but it's still working fine many many weeks
later and we haven't changed the amount of printing we are doing. I might be
wrong but it seems as if the gauge reads empty when in fact the cart is
between 50 and 75% full. My estimate continues to rise as it's still working
fine.

Experts will know all about this... but this is the worst I've seen. I must
try weighing the carts next time.

I never paid any attention to software guages. It's very likely the
measurement is done by calculating the total number of pages since new
carts were installed and doesn't reflect the true level at all.

The low on ink indicator (LOI) is designed to give you time to have a new
cartridge on hand. Normally it would give a signal with a bit of ink still
remaining (<20%). Unlike some printers the DeskJet's do not restrict printing
based on the LOI; you can continue to print until the cartridge is actually
empty (and beyond). At this point your cartridge is much much less than 50%
full.

The LOI does not count pages but rather counts individual drop firings.

Oh yes I know... but this one seems to be so inaccurate they might as well
remind you to buy a spare one immediatly you change a cart.
