external monitor plays video incorrectly

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop. The screen busted, so I hooked up an
external monitor. It works fine unless I try to play video with
either Windows Media Player or RealOne Player, when the video fills
the entire screen.

If I have WMP open without playing a video, it is fine. But if I play
a video, the video expands and takes up the entire monitor screen. At
the end of the video, the WMP screen goes black like it would
normally, but it doesn’t shrink again, so I have a blank monitor, and
I can’t close WMP, so I have to restart. Please help. Thanks.
