External Hard drive not visible

S

Srinivas

I have an external hard drive that is not visible in the 'My Computer'
or in the Disk Management. I was able to use it on my computer. But
lately I cannot see them. I have read articles asking me to assign a
drive letter, but as I cannot see it in the disk management, I cannot
do that.

Is there something else that I need to check to make this working. I
even tried to check this on my laptop. same problem

Any suggestions

If you don't see it in Disk Management, it isn't being detected and
installed properly. Try another device (USB thumb drive?) and try this one
in another USB port. Or firewire, if that's what you're using.

If the same external drive isn't detected on two machines, it's a dead
drive.

Suppose a USB2 drive is detected on machine A, but not on machine B?

Any idea where to start troubleshooting?

Machine B seems tb recognizing the wrapper bc the little USB icon in the system
tray says "Safely remove device" or some such... but no ref to a drive
letter/name.

Look in Disk Management, and change/assign a drive letter.

I think you may've missed this bit in the original post:
