External Hard Drive [cyclic redundancy check error] ???

When I try to copy files onto my computer from my external hard drive on most
of the files I get an error "cyclic redundancy check" and then it fails to
copy the file. The external hard drive is fairly new. What is causing this
error? is my computer hard drive bad (about 4 yrs old), or is my external
hard drive bad? any suggestions on whats wrong?

A CRC indicates a serious hardware problem. You have to
find out by a process of elimination if it is caused by the
external or the internal disk. Alternatively, examine the
Event Logger (eventvwr.exe) and check for error messages.
