External case for ATA hard disks

N

nuchako

Hi,

I have a question that have probably been answered many times before..
(Sorry in that case)

My problem is:
I want to move my 7 hard disks from the overcrowded ATX case with the
CPU in it, to a separate ATX case with just a power supply and the
disks in it... (and the IDE cables going back to my ATA RAID5 card)

Now: ATX case1: PSU + CPU + RAID card + 7 hard disks + Gfx card

Goal: ATX case1: PSU1 + CPU + RAID card + CDROM
ATX case2: PSU2 + 7 disks

Is this possible? If so, how? If not, what can I do?

Thanks for any answers/ideas...

/Mike

You can get pretty long rounded ATA cables, if you cut holes in the sides of
the two cases you can simply thread the cables through.

You can either buy a gadget to switch the PSU on in the HD case when the
main PC is switched on or you can fit a switch to the front of the case and
wire it to connect two pins on the PSU.

The problem you'll be presented with is that the two cases become difficult
to move around and gain access to.

Larger, cube shaped, cases are available, which may well suit you although
they can be quite expensive.

Another alternative is to buy a networked storage solution. The disk space
will be online over Ethernet but again this is a more expensive option.

For my own part, I have never had a thought which I could not set down
in words with even more distinctness than that with which I conceived
it. There is, however, a class of fancies of exquisite delicacy which
are not thoughts, and to which as yet I have found it absolutely
impossible to adapt to language. These fancies arise in the soul, alas
how rarely. Only at epochs of most intense tranquillity, when the
bodily and mental health are in perfection. And at those weird points
of time, where the confines of the waking world blend with the world of
dreams. And so I captured this fancy, where all that we see, or seem,
is but a dream within a dream.

Why not just buy a RAID device that does exactly this?

Thanks for the replies.

I'm trying to keep the cost down... It's just for home use, so I think
I will try the dual case option...
Buying a external RAID5 case costs a small fortune.

If the dual case thing doesnt work, I will try iSCSI with a cheap Linux
box and use the network as "disk cable".

Too expensive, this is just for home use...
Can't motivate myself to spend 5000 usd to make my Day Of Defeat game
load a bit faster... ;-)

hehe

What about what another respondent suggested, buying a better case?
Right now I have five hard drives in my Antec SLK3000 case as a primary
drive and two pairs of RAID1 drives. I wired the Vantec Stealth 120mm
front fan to run at 5V rather than 12V and it's working well, nice
gentle hum of the 5 fans (maybe six- how many fans are in an Antec
Truepower PSU?): Antec 120mm rear fan on full power at 12V, Vantec
Stealth 80mm side fan at 5V, Vantec Stealth 120mm front fan at 5V, AMD
CPU fan, Antec PSU fan(s). The drives were getting quite warm before I
put them in this new case. I also HATE noise, and while this does have
the hum of airflow, it doesn't have that whining fan noise at all. I'm
sure another 2 HDDs in there wouldn't hurt, either. You'd need a few
splitters to have enough connections, though. There's also a thermaltake
case for about $100AUD more that has room for 10 drives. I forget the
model offhand, but was thinking it looked pretty sweet :)

ThermalTake Armor.. That is one sweet case.... It is too big for my
deskspace though. I can only fit a midtower under my desk.
But maybe it is worth having it as a furniture piece...

If you dont like noise you have to go water/liquid cooling...

Thanks for all the help. I'm going on a shppoing spree. I need to a buy
a new power supply. My old MGE PSU 400W "burnt up" yesterday... Piece
of crap.
Using my old faithful until I get a Mad Dog SurePower 600W one..
Hopefully that one is not crap. I can't find a store around here that
sell the Antec 550W PSU

So what's it to be then? A better case with adequate cooling along with
sound deadening and a quiet coolers/fans/psu, or a slim case and some long
leads to bolt to your existing case?

or just order it from newegg.com (assuming you're in the USA)

the internet is good for that. i am sure that the USA is not the only place
to buy Antec.

While Antec is global (thankfully), the USA is the only place newegg.com
will ship their Antec PSUs, though :) hehe
